ASTM E2871 and E2562 Standard Test Method for Evaluating Disinfectant Efficacy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilm

Purpose of Test

The ASTM E2562 Standard Test Method describes the procedures used to grow a reproducible Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm representative of situations where biofilm exists under high shear utilizing a CDC Biofilm Reactor. The ASTM E2871 Standard Test Method describes the procedures used to perform a quantitative liquid disinfection efficacy test against biofilm bacteria in a closed, single tube system.

Summary of Test

In these methods, a biofilm is grown onto a series of coupons (“carriers”) are treated with a sample of the product and are allowed to exposure. Following exposure, the carriers are neutralized, sonicated/mixed and assayed for surviving biofilm bacteria. The resulting plates are incubated, enumerated, and percent and log10 reductions are determined as compared to a population control. Currently, no established reduction limits exist for biofilm related claims made using these methods.
